I was skeptical about Pirate’s Booty when I first heard about it. I like anime, but I’ve never been a big fan of CGI. As a kid, I was obsessed with the new field of CGI, even writing letters to the animators of Tron. But as computers got faster, I lost interest in the idea of full-length CGI films. The stiff, odd movements and slightly unsettling appearance of the human CGI characters had turned me off with what's now called the “uncanny valley” effect. Even with my bias, I was immediately sucked in by the cinematic qualities of Pirate's Booty right from the opening. As soon as the phenomenal musical score had begun and a huge pirate ship began sailing towards the camera, I immediately forgot all my fears about seeing another disappointing CGI epic (such as the original Final Fantasy film!)

There’s actually a coherent story in Pirate's Booty, in the form of a ghost who uses his spectral powers to unleash the hidden sexual desires of each member of a pirate ship's crew. It’s a simple idea, but it's kept interesting with clever scene set-ups that are consistently smart and sexy. The composition and editing is on par with any mainstream blockbuster (except for the fact that much of it involves hardcore sex!) The characters are extremely realistic, if not perfect, and they each have unique personalities and quirks of movement. There are lots of virtuoso details, such as the way the mound of flesh around a character's asshole will subtly bulge and then flatten as it's being fucked. If you make an effort to really study each scene, you'll find these kind of incredible details throughout. The creators clearly invested a great deal of time in storyboarding and character development before they had ever even begun contructing their character models.

Pirate’s Booty is definitely worthwhile as a porn film, but it’s also worthwhile as an important achievement in animation that all fans of CGI will want to see. It’s not like a regular porn film exactly – and yet it's not like a traditional animated epic either. It’s something altogether new that manages to be immersive and entertaining while simultaneously giving you a hard-on.

It’s really surprising to see a groundbreaking and elaborate CGI experiment like Pirate's Booty created for North American consumption – especially one made primarily for gay men. You might expect to see this kind of project happening in Japan, but if you had said a few years ago that someone would succeed in getting something this elaborate and big-budget made, no one would have believed you.

One of the most striking sequences happens in scene two, when a red-headed pirate is imprisoned in stocks on a stormy, abandoned dock. As the richly layered sounds of thunder, rainfall, and intricate foley work envelop you, you begin to appreciate just how integral the sound design is to Pirate’s Booty.

The film is by no means a parody, but like any good pirate film it follows a pattern of tension and release, contrasting the drama of hot sex with little bits of comic relief. If this had been a lesser film, you might laugh when the imprisoned sailer in scene 2 is approached by his swarthy pirate captor. The pirate then rasps, “You’re kind of a... captive audience! Ay - you’ve the Golden Hide! [stroking his ass] Ay... I’d like to circumnavigate your ass for an hour or two! I wonder when’s the last time you was rogered by a proper man like meself…” Rather than coming off as complete camp, however, it actually works. The voice acting is spot on and the animation is so hot that – try as I might – I just couldn’t make a mockery of it. With it’s playful and irreverent dialogue, Pirate’s Booty rises above any potential pitfalls. Fans of dirty talk and clever writing are in for a treat. Occasionally we’re even thrown a subtle but clearly intentional laugh – such as when the aggressive pirate top of scene 2 cries out mid-fuck, “I’ll give ya yer piece of eight! Arg – I’ll give ye a piece o’ twelve!!” The scene is hot, but you'll also smile when the same character collapses like a stiff board after cumming (in what seems to be a nod to the visual vocabulary of classic cartoons.)

The animation in Pirate's Booty aims for ultra-realism and the only places where it falls a little short are those spots where basically all CGI still falls short. Skin can look a bit too shiny at times and things like facial hair occasionally look stiff or flat. But these are really nit-picky observations about a film that rivals the work of mainstream studios like DreamWorks.

In closing, Pirate’s Booty is a hot porn that will get you off – as well as an important milestone in CGI animation and gay porn that genre buffs will want to screen at least once. Whereas other CGI films often fail because of current technical limitations, Pirate’s Booty compensates for these brilliantly with excellent writing, clever and erotic scene set-ups, top-notch voice acting that will get you hard even if you close your eyes, perfectly timed bits of humor, and stunning sets and enviroments for the virtual performers to live in.
